PLANTED TANK SERVICE EXPLAINED
Planted aquarium maintenance isn’t all that much different from a reef tank to a certain degree. Water changes are done to replenish trace elements for the plants just like coral. Regular maintenance will keep the conditions prime for plant growth.
Here’s some of our highlighted services that come with your planted aquarium service agreement:
- Plant trimming
- Fertilizer (Simple one part)
- Replace CO2 tank
- Algaecide treatment.
Regardless of he method of fertilization you chose, or the use of C02, Reef Route Aquatics can help keep your aquarium clean and your plants green.
Differences Between Planted Tank versus Fish Only
First off lets define the differences between the 2 systems. This will help you, and Reef Route Aquatics understand and identify the tasks, objectives, and scope of work needed to successfully keep both.
One of the major differences is lighting. Planted tank setups almost always have a higher PAR or better than average lighting setup. Either Metal halide , sodium vapor, or intense LED’s to name a few. A fish only aquarium doesn’t even really need lighting at all. The main purpose of lighting in a fish only system is to see the fish. It doesn’t need to be powerful, and should be dimly lit. After all we’re just trying to view fish, not grow unwanted algae.
The second major difference is the dependency of trace elements. Not to be misunderstood, any aquarium with a plant would or could benefit from some extra fertilizer, but a planted tank would most likely suffer if not dosed on a regular basis. In order for Reef Route Aquatics to call a planted tank a “Planted Aquarium,” it must require additional supplements.
The substrate is the last real difference between the two. Substrate for a fish only aquarium should really be cleaned every 4 weeks. This helps remove detritus and uneaten food that causes issues with algae. With all the different substrate methods and types for planted aquariums, cleaning the gravel or sand is almost a no, no in most cases. We either don’t want to disturb the substrate, or we end up removing nutrients that the plants could be using naturally.
So there you have it. These are the major differences between planted and fish only systems. If you have any further questions? Feel free to visit our BLOG page on the subject or send us an email. We’ll be more than glad to help out a fellow hobbyist.
