Pond Maintenance
Reef Route Aquatics DOES NOT believe in pumping down, removing fish, and pressure washing ponds out.
We question the biological removal, and how a pond would benefit from being stripped of microfauna, and smaller life forms that only helps support the cycle of ponds.
With our pond Installations we have a suggested plan for annual and monthly maintenance as needed.
SPRING
- Leaf Clean Out: Using a standard pond net, clean out leaves as need.
- Pump Section Cleaning: Remove sediment and soil from pump area.
- Filter Backflush: Backflushing of filters. (If applicable)
- Pound Clarity: Install barley bales in pump section or spill way.
- Slug Remover: Dose slug remover and other beneficial bacteria.
SUMMER
- Grooming: Remove or trim over grown plants
- Pump Section Cleaning: Remove sediment and soil from pump area.
- Filter Backflush: Backflushing of filters. (If applicable)
- Pound Clarity: Install barley bales in pump section or spill way.
- Temperature Check: Idea temperature during the summer months is between 60°f-77°f.
- 80°f is not acceptable and water looses it’s ability to hold oxygen, and could lead to the death of fish. Add floating plants to help shade the pond, and add heavy aeration to help infuse more atmosphere and oxygen into the water column.
- Slug remover is not added during the summer months due to its affects on oxygen in the water column.
FALL
- Pond Netting: Pond netting may or may not be necessary. Allow some leaves to enter the pond. This will help limit the stress levels of koi and allow them to have extra cover during the winner months.
- Pump Section Cleaning: Remove sediment and soil from pump area.
- Filter Backflush: Backflushing of filters. (If applicable)
- Slug Remover: Dose slug remover and other beneficial bacteria.
WINTER
- Winter Inspection: Due to the temperatures and the dangers of freezing. No pump work will be performed.
- DE-Icing: De-icers, boilers, and large air diffusers may be used to keep pond from freezing.
- We do not recommend turning off the main pump. Moving water does not freeze, and may prevent winter damage.
In addition to what we provide with pond maintenance, pond services may also include the following:

- Visual check of equipment, filtration, back flushing filter, and water flow.
- Visual check of disease, swimming and breathing of fish.
- Adding bacteria or enzymes to correct slug, or clarity.
- Leaf removal. (As Needed)
All repairs are scheduled and billed hourly. Estimates will be given at the time of discovery in great detail.
POND INSTALLATION
CUSTOM LOW MAINTENANCE POND SETUP
Reef Route Aquatics has a low maintenance approach to keeping koi ponds and water gardens. We don’t use skimmers, or other mechanical means to filter a water feature. We isolate the water pump so that it doesn’t come in contact with wildlife or the animals we’re trying to keep.

We actually use other animals and insects to help manage the pond. This allows for a low maintenance design, and you’ll spend more time enjoying your pond rather than worrying about it.
What does "LOW" maintenance mean?
Just top off if the water level gets low, and occasionally clean out the pump and pump area, and maybe clean out some debris in the spring? That’s all! We use other life forms to manage the system, so you don’t have to.
