Our Story

Built on Helping Hobbyists, Not Selling Services

What started as a free aquarium help line in 2016 grew into one of Middle Tennessee’s trusted aquarium service and installation companies. Today, Reef Route Aquatics supports reef aquariums, planted tanks, freshwater communities, turtle habitats, cichlid systems, and saltwater fish-only aquariums with professional maintenance, installation, monitoring, and water testing services.

From a Free Help Line to Trusted Aquarium Experts

Our Story

Reef Route Aquatics was never supposed to become a business.

Back in the summer of 2016, while spending countless hours helping fellow hobbyists on aquarium forums and social media groups, something started appearing everywhere: aquarium help hotlines charging hobbyists for advice.

The advertisements were hard to miss.

“$9.99 for the first minute and $0.99 for every additional minute.”

To me, that felt completely opposite of what the aquarium hobby had always been about.

For decades, experienced hobbyists shared their knowledge freely. Whether someone was battling algae, struggling with water chemistry, losing fish, or setting up their first reef aquarium, the community existed to help one another succeed.

I reached out to forum moderators and group administrators hoping they would remove the advertisements. Unfortunately, nothing changed.

So I decided to do something myself.

I created a simple banner using the same Reef Route Aquatics logo we still use today, connected an old MagicJack phone line, opened a Gmail account, and started posting a message underneath every paid aquarium help advertisement I could find:

“Contact Reef Route Aquatics. We’ll help you for free.”

People started calling.

What began as a simple effort to help fellow hobbyists quickly turned into countless conversations about aquarium troubleshooting, fish health, water chemistry, reef keeping, filtration systems, aquascaping, and equipment selection.

I genuinely enjoyed every minute of it.

Not only was I helping others succeed, but I was also rediscovering lessons and experiences I had learned throughout years in the hobby.

Then something unexpected happened.

In 2017, local hobbyists began reaching out and asking if I could come to their homes and help in person.

One aquarium became two.

Two became ten.

Before long, Reef Route Aquatics had evolved into a professional aquarium service company built on the exact same principle it started with:

Help people succeed.

Today, Reef Route Aquatics provides professional aquarium installation, maintenance, monitoring, water testing, and consulting services throughout Middle Tennessee.

While our company has grown, our mission has never changed.

We believe aquarium ownership should be enjoyable, educational, and rewarding—not frustrating.

Whether you’re caring for a thriving reef aquarium, a planted freshwater display, a turtle habitat, a cichlid aquarium, or a saltwater fish-only system, our goal remains exactly what it was back in 2016:

Provide honest advice, dependable service, and help every aquarium reach its full potential.
